Mar Thoma Church in History

The traditional belief is that Saint Thomas (Mar Thoma), one of the twelve disciples of Jesus Christ came to India in the year AD 52 and established the church in the Malabar coast. Mar Thoma Syrian Church is one of the oldest denominations of Christianity. The Church defines itself as "Apostolic in origin, Universal in nature, Biblical in faith, Evangelical in principle, Ecumenical in outlook, Oriental in worship."

The Mar Thoma Church Staten Island

From a humble beginning in 1980 with 25 families our church has grown to 128 families.

Our New Church Facility

In 2005, by the Grace of God we dedicated the new church facility at the cost of $2.3 Million. We thank God for His abundant mercy. "This church is the indestructible, monumental accumulation of the prayers, the hopes, the ideals, and the faith of all the people in this church. We are the army of God and this church is the fortress of our strength. The beauty and glory of this church have been dearly purchased in prayer and pain and we salute and remember with gratitude those who worked tirelessly to erect this monument of faith. This church is here because we have a prosperous present, a bright future, a united diocese, a dynamic bishop, and devoted clergies. All the members of this parish rejoice in the beauty of our new and glorious temple to God’s glory."

OCTOBER, 2017

  • From the desk of the Vicar

Dearly beloved in Christ

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

The reformation in the church paved the way for the great urge in the minds of people for group prayer and Bible study which re-sulted in the formation of Mar Thoma Voluntary Evangelistic Association in 1924.The parish level unit of the association is known as the Edavaka Mission. The Edavaka Mission has to fol-low the seven point program in its activities that are; 1.Intercession 2.Bible Study 3.Sharing of experience 4.House visit 5.Serving the sick and the needy 6.Conduct of Prayer meet-ings 7.Gospel work among people of other faiths and ideologies. As we observe October 1st as MTVEA Sunday let us pray and submit our Edavaka Mission activities for the extension of King-dom of God.

Family night, sports Day and Parish Convention were organized in a meaningful manner. I would like to place on records with thanks to all those who participated and supported the events.

Light to Life is a new project implemented by our Diocese to help poor students in India and Native American mission fields. A child can be sponsored by donating $20 a month. I request all the families to join in this project to transform the lives of people for a better world.

Let us uphold 18th Diocesan Sevika Sanghom Conference in our prayers as it begins on Oct 12. May the conference draw us closer to Christ, enrich our sense of purpose, and connect us more deeply with the mission of the church.

It is with great anticipation and excitement that we planned to purchase a parsonage. I am confident that we are going to see a great work of God, so keep your chin up, trust in God and your knees down.

In service to Christ and His Church

Rev.Reni K Abraham
